Kharkov World War II History Tours

During World War II, also known as the ‘Great Patriotic War’ to those from the former Soviet Union, there were four battles of Kharkov. Your tour will provide a unique and rewarding insight into the interesting and important locations within this great city and provide a unique insight that you cannot receive anywhere else. Your guide is fluent in English and is accompanied by a historical expert on all aspects of Kharkov and WWII. You will be escorted throughout the 4 hour tour in a comfortable modern vehicle, enabling you to see as much history and locations as is possible.

Your tour begins at 23 August at the “Monument to the Soldier of Liberation, Pavel” which is devoted to those Soviet troops who liberated Kharkov from Nazi occupation in 1943. The statue was opened in 2008.

Next you will visit the majestic and serine “Memorial of Glory”, opened in 1977 it is a picturesque forest memorial to salute those Patriots, Partisans and Soviet Soldiers who were all executed by the Nazis in this location.

You will then be taken to the “Memorial for the Victims of Totalitarianism”. This memorial was opened in 2000. This is the location where 3,820 Polish Army prisoners were executed without trial from the 5th of April to the 12th of May 1940. The names of all of the victims are immortalized here.

Then you will be shown the Holocaust Memorial, Drobitsky Yar. This memorial remembers the victims of the Holocaust and was opened by the Ambassador of Israel, Anna Azari in December 2002. The Ambassador bestowed posthumously to 12 Ukrainians the title “Righteous among Nations” for their efforts in helping Jewish people within Kharkiv during WWII.

We then take you to the location of a former Nazi Ghetto within Kharkov where many thousands of locals were imprisoned. Nearby you will also visit a cemetery for Nazi Military; this location is the resting place for a million unknown combatants.
